Grant during the war with Spain. Lewis, John F., born in Virginia, 1818; elected U. S. Senator from his State, 1869. Died, September 2, 1895. Lewisburg, W. Va., May 23, 1862. The Confederate General Heth, with about 2,500 men, attacked Colonel George Crook's Federal brigade at Lewisburg. Crook had about 1,500 men. The Confederates became panic-stricken and retreated in confusion. The town was captured by the Federal General Averell on November 7, 1864, during a raid. Lexington, Ky., was settled in 1775 by Colonel Robert Patterson. The town was incorporated in 1782, and the first Legislature of the State met here. The State University was removed here in 1865. Population in igoo, 26,369. "Liberty," a sloop belonging to John Hancock, which was seized in 1768 in Massachusetts on the ground of having evaded the customs. Considerable excitement arose, and the royal revenue officers, in pretended fear of their lives, took refuge on the man-of-war "Romney." "Liberty Boys." Same as "Sons of Liberty" (q. v.). "Liberty Tree." An oak that stood in Mazyckboro Square, Charleston, under which the patriots used to hold their meetings.
